Our Why
Greater Austin has the nation’s 3rd largest population of adults who openly identify as LGBTQIA+.
More than 135,700 openly LGBTQIA+ adults live here and have more than $5.3 Billion in annual buying power. Greater Austin’s LGBTQIA+ youth population is estimated to be almost equal in size to our adult population.
~50% of local LGBTQIA+ residents are people of color.
While 400,000 people attend the Austin Pride festival in August, data from 2021 research studies by the City of Austin and QWELL Community Foundation shows that many LGBTQIA+ people of color in Central Texas feel disconnected and unsupported.
Nationwide, we see queer/trans people of color (QTPOC) struggling with their mental health, oppression, and social isolation. We see movement leaders burning out at an accelerated rate.
WHY you should support A FESTIVAL IN AUSTIN, TEXAS
The Texas capital is ground zero for LGBTQIA+ equality.
The Texas State Legislature has introduced an unprecedented number of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills, creating a toxic environment for queer Texans. QTPOC, especially trans women of color, endure discrimination and threats.
In this environment, QTPOC need events like Austin’s Colors of Pride Festival to build feelings of belonging, community-connectedness, and strength.
Positive or negative, what happens in Texas has repercussions nationwide. We hope the positive impact of Austin’s COLORS OF PRIDE FESTIVAL will be felt across Texas and the USA.
3rd
LARGEST OUT LGBTQIA+ POPULATION
Greater Austin has the nation’s third largest openly LGBTIA+ population in the United States, per capita, according to Gallup and Williams Institute.
$5.3B
IN ANNUAL BUYING POWER
Austin’s more than 135,700 out LGBTQIA+ adults have more than $5.3 Billion in annual buying power.
400K
Annual austin pride attendance
The annual attendance for Austin Pride, in August, is estimated at 400,000.
“The Colors of Pride Festival will inspire and reinvigorate QTPOC in Texas and around the country, providing a powerful pull for QTPOC to join the movement to build a better future.”
